The Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp complex was the largest of its kind established by the Nazi regime. Today, the Memorial, which was founded in 1947 by the Polish government and added by UNESCO to its list of World Heritage Sites in 1979, is devoted to the memory of the murders that took place during World War II.
